1690.-Three war parties defeated the English nt Corln.r, (Schenectady), Salmon Falls,
(New-Hampshire) and Casco. Sieg-e of Quebec by Phipps. Exploit of Made-
leine de Verchères at VerdH\res fort.
169l.-The English of New England made IL descent upon Quebec under Schuyler by Lake
Champl:ün and were repulsed at La Prairie de la MILdeleine. Population of
New FrILnce: 12,4.31 souls.
l693.--General Hospital founded in Quebec by Mgr de St. Valier.
1694.-Foundf\tion of Montreal General Hospital by M. Charon de la Barre. In the 18th
century this institution was confided ta Madame d'Youville, foundress of the
Grey Nuns.
1695.-Fort Cataracoui, rebuilt by Frontenac.
1696.-D'Iberville captured St. John, Newfoundland, and fort Pemaquid.
l697.-Treaty of Ryswick: Hudson's Bay restored to France, and Newfoundland ta England.
l698.-Ursuline convent at Three Rivera, founded by Mgr. de St. Valier. Death of Fron-

l701.-Grand treaty of peace signed at Montreal between the Indians und the French.
Detroit founded by Lamotte-Cadillac and Mobile by Lemoine de Bienville.
Canadians granted the right to manufacture. Beginning of the war of the
Spanish Succession, which also had its effect in Canada.
14th Govemor: M. de Vaudreuil (1703 ta 1725).
1704.-The settlements of Deerfield and Haverhill destroyed by Hertel de Rouville. Mgr.
de St. Valier, who was returnillg from France on the "Seine", made prisoner
by the Englieh and obliged to spend 8 years in London. Church attacked Port
Royal in Aeadia, but was repLÙsed by Governor Subercase.

l725.-Wreek of the "Chameau", carrying 250 passengers, Intendant Chazel, Recollets and
, Jesuits, near Louioburg. Death of M. de Vaudreuil.
15th Governor: M. de Beav.harnois (1726 to 1742).
l727.-Death of Mgr. de Saint Valier. Mgr. de Mornay, named 3rd bishop of Quebee
but he did not come to Canada. Mgr. Dosquet administered the church and
became 4th titular bishop in 1733.
1.729.-Massacre of the French in Louisiana by the Natchez. Fort Frederick erected at
the head of Lake Champlain.
