1784.-Poplùation of Canada: 113,012 souls.
1786.-GA.rlcton returned ta Canada ,vith the title of Lord Dorchester.
1788.-Mgr. Hubert, 9th bishop of Quebec.

4th Govern(Jr: Lord Dorch.ester (1786-96).
1791.-Canada divided into two parts: Lower Canada and Upper Canada. The House of
Assembly of Lower Canada cornprised 50 members and the Legislative Council,
12 members. The use of the two languages recognized in the parliamentary
debates and the reports of the votes and proceedings of Lower Canada. Es-
tablishment of a seroi-monthly postal service between Canada and the United
States.

1797.-Establishment of a weekly postal service between Ca.Il11da and the United States.
Mgr. Denault, 10th bishop of Quebec. Arrivai of 26 French priests.
1798.-Burning of the Recollet convent and church fit Quebec. The Govemor opposed
to the erection of new Catholic parishes. Execution of McLnne, accused of
lllgh treason.

1800.-The Government took possession of the Jesuits' Estates on the death of Father
Cazot.
1801.--i3chool founded to Anglicize the French CanAdians, under the name of the Royal
Institution. It WaS a failure.
1803.-Slavery dcclared illegal in Luwer Cana.d.a. The Nicolet Seminary founded by Mgr
Ples~is.
Administrator: Horwrable Thomas Dunn (1805 to 1807).
180S.-The "Mercury", founded by the English.

1807.-Publie dchools established in Upper Canada.
6th Governor: Sir James H(ff/ry Craig (1807 to 1811).
1808.-House dissolved by the govemor. The same members returned by the people.
1809.-The first stearnboat, "The Accommodation", descended the river from Montreal to
Quebee. The presses of the "Canadien" seizcd and Bedard, Papineau, Tasche-
reau and BI;:.nchel, il11prisoned. Mgr. Plessis opposed to the Governor having the
appointment of the pariEh priests made by the King.
i811.-St, Hyacinthe Semi.nary, and the Herald newspaper founded at Montreal.
7th Governor: &r George Prevost (1811 lo 1815).
1812.-The Americans invaded Canada, but were repulsed at Detroit, Queenstown and
Buffalo. At the Governor's request, Mgr Plessis was offici8lly recognized ru; bis-
hop of Quebec by the King. Legal existence of the Catholic religion recognized.
1813.-SalabelTY, at the head of 300 Canadians, repulsed Hampton, who commanded 7,000
Ameriean troops, at Châteauguay. The Amerieans again defeated at French-
town and Chrysler's Farm. McGill College founded.
