IGG4.-The West Indies Company obtains the privileges of the Company of the Hundred
Assoeiates. The Island of Montreal beeomes the property of the Sulpicians.
Misunderstanding between Govemor de Mésy and Mgr de Laval.
IGGS.-Arrival of M. de Tracy, Intendant Talon, and the Carignnn regiment.
First horses brought into New France. Forts Sorel, Chambly and Ste. Thérèse,
erected on the Richelieu river.
8th Govemor : M. de Courcelle (1665 to 1672).
IGGG.-Lachine, near Montreal, founded by LaSalle.
IGG7.-The first census shows a population of 3918 in the colony.
IGG8.-The Minor Seminary of Quebee and the Agricultural School of St. Joachim, founded
by Mgr de Laval. A hne of navigation established between Quebec and the
West Indies by Intendant Talon. Tithe~ established for the support of the
Catholie clergy.

l670.-Hudson Bay Company founded.
1671.-Fathers Albanel and Denys ascend the Saguenay to Lake St. Jolm. The Sieur de
St. Lusson takes llolemm possession of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding country
in the name of Louis XIV.
9th Governor: M. de Frontenac (167~ to 1682).
1672.-Fort Cataraeoui built on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Fathers Albanel and
Denys, eontinuing their joumey Northward, reached James Bay overland.
l6n.-Jolliet and Father Marquette discover the Mississippi.
l614.-Quebec erected into a bishoprie.
l679.-La Salle hOO the ship Griffolt built on Lake Ontario.
l680.-La Salie erected Forts Niagara and Creve-Cœur, Jolliet received a grant of land
on the island of Anticosti. The King granted to La Salle the fort and seigniory
of Cataraeoui.
lG81.-Monastery of the Reoollets erected in the Upper TOWli of Quebec.
1682.-Mouth of the Mississippi, diseovered by La St.lle, who took possession of the adja.cent
countries by planting a cross with the arms of France and giving them the
name of Louisiana in honor of Louis XIV.
10th Govemor: M. de la Barre (1682 to 1685).
IG84.-La Barre's expedition against the Iroquois with 1200 troops. The Governor, hav-
