                                            DISCOv'ERY PERIOD (1492 to 1(08).
                        1492.-Christapher Columbus discovered America and visited the islands of San Salvador,
                                 Cuba o.nd Haiti.
                        1497.-8ebastian Cabot discovered Labrador.
                        lS00.-Gnspllxd Cortereal discovered Newfoundland.
                        1624.-Verazzani explored the coast of Americn from Florida to Newfoundland and gave the
                                 name of New France to the country discovered.
                        1534.-First voyage of Jacque~ Cartier. Took possession of the country in the names of
                                 France and of Christ, by planting a cross surrnounted by the arma of France
                                 at the head of Gaspe Bay.
                        153S.-Gartier's second voyage. Ascended the St. Lawrence ta Hochelaga, now Montreal.
                        1541.-Gartier's third voyage, bringing several hundred volunteers ta take possession of thiB
                                 new kingdom in the name of the King of France, Francis 1.
                        1598.-First attempt at colonization, in Acadia.  The Marquis de la Roche landed 60
                                 convicts on Sable Islo.nd, where they remained prisoners for 5 years.
                        1603.-DeChastes sent Champlain and Pontgravé on an exploring expedition in New France
                                 and they cirew up a map of the Saint Lawrence up ta Sault St. Louis.
                        1604.-M. de Monts' Company sent settlers to Acadia under the command of Champlain
                                 and Poutrincourt.
                        160S.-Port Royal founded by de Monts.
                                          THE COMPANY PERIOD (1608 ta 1663).
                                      lst Gov&rnor: Samuel Champlain, (1608 ta 1635)  (1).
                        1608.-Quebec founded by Champlain.
                        .1609.-ChArnplain's expedition ta the lake which bears his name; in a first fight with the
                                 Iroquois, ChlI.mplain put them ta flight.
                        1610.-Ghamplain's second expedition against the Iroquois, on the river Richelieu, when
                                 they were again repulsed.
                        1611.-Two Jesuite, Rev. F. Massé and Biart, evangelize the Micmacs.
                        161S.-In a third battle with the Iroquois, near the Great Lakcs, Champlain was wounded
                                 and Brent the winter in that r-egion. ArrivaI at Quebec of the Recollet Fathers
                                 Jamo.y, Dolbeau, LeCaron and Brother Duplessis.
                        1616.-Establishment of the first schools in New France, at Thrce Rlvers and Tadousac,
                                 under the Recollct Fathers.
                        1617.-Louis Hebert, the first settler, arrived at Quebec with his family.
                        1620.-Con.struction of Fort St. Louis at Quebec. The Recollet convent erected on the site
                                 of the General Hospital near the River St. Charles.
                        1621.-First registers of civil status opened at Quebec.  First code of laws published at
                                 Quebec. Formation of the Montmorency.Compa.DY.
                        1623.-First n.ttempts of the English ta colonize Acadia now Nova Scotia by Sir William
                                 Alexander Kirke.
                        1625.-Arriva! of the Jesuit Fathers Lallemant, Massé and Brébeuf.
                        1626.-ehn.mp!ain established a fa.rm near Cape Tourmente.
