                             1627.-The Company of Kew France called that of the Hundred Associates obtained an
                                      exclusive privilege of tbe fUr trade on the oondition of sending 1600 families ta
                                      Canaela in 15 years and ta maint.ain missionaries at its expense.
                             1629.-Quebec taken by the Kirke brothers, Champlain is brought to England and goes back
                                      to France.
                             1632.-Quebec restored 1.0 France by the treaty of St. Germain-en-Laye. Champlain
                                      resumed the office of Governor and had the chapel of Notre Dame de la Recouv-
                                      rance built in the 10wer town.
                             1634.-Three Rivers foundcd by de la Violette.  Robert Giffard obtained the first seigniory
                                      at the pInce whel'e the mWlicipality of Gilbrd islocated (near Quebec).
                             1635.-First eollege foundcd ut Qucbec by the Marquis de Gamache. Death of the founder
                                      of New France on 25th December.

                                              2nd Governor: M. de Montmagny (1636 to 1648).

                             1636.-Island of Montreal granted ta M. de Lauzon.
                             1637.-Establishment of an industrial scbool for the Indians, by M. de Sillery, three miles
                                      above Quebee.
                             1639.-Arrival of the Ursuline and Hospital Nuns.  Foundation of the eonvent of the
                                      former by Madame de la Peltrie and of the Hotel Dieu for the latter through the
                                      I!:enerosity of the Dueheas d'Aiguillon. niece of Cardinal Richelieu.
                             1640.-FoWldation of the Montreal Company, whieh purchased the island of that ruune.
                             1642.-Foundation of Montreal, then Ville-Marie, by M. de MaiBonneuve.  Fort Richelieu
                                      built near Sorel 301. the mouth of the rivcr of that name, by M. de Montmagny.
                             1644.-The Hotel-Dieu of MontreuI founded by Jeanne Mance.
                             1645.-The Company of the HWldrcd Assoeiates lrausfers its right ta the Compagnie des
                                      Habitants; Mont.magny concludes a treaty of peace with the Iroquois, the
                                      Algonquins and the Hurons.
                             1646.-The Saguenay explored by Futher Dablon. Martyrdom of Father Jogues, Jesuit, by
                                      the Iroquois. The Kennebec and Chaudière rivers discovered by Father Druil·
                                      lette.
                             1647.-Lake St. John discovered by Father DeQuen. Fort Richelieu burned by the Iroquois
                                      "The Counci! of Quebec" establisted ta manage the affairs of New France.

                                             3rd Governor: M. d'Ailleboust (1048 to 1651).

                             1648.-Massaere of Father Daniel and 700 neophytes by the Iroquois at the Indian Village
                                      of St. Joseph.
                             1649.-Destruction by the Iroquois of the Indian Villages of St. Ignace, St. Louis and St.
                                      John.  Massacre of Fathers Lallemond, Brébœuf and Garnier and nearly al! the
                                      Hurons.
                             1650.-Martin Boutet opened a school at Quebee for the children of the French. The
                                      Ursuline CODvent burnt.

                                              4th Govemor: M. de Lau-um, 0651 to 1657).

                             1651.-Duplessis de Kerbodot, governor of the place, murdered at Thl'ee Rivers.
                             1653.-Arrival nt Ville Marie of Marguerite Bourgeoys who later founded the Congrega-
                                      tion de Notre Dame.
                             1654.-The EngUsh seize Aeadia, now Nova Sçotia.
                             1657.-Arrival of the 8ulpicia.ns at Ville Marie.
                             1658.-eanada erected into an Apostolie Vieariate, with Mgr de LAval, 80S titular bishop.

                                               5th Governor: M. d'Argenson (1657 te 1661).

                             1659 -Arriva.I of Mgr de La.val, [irst bishop of Quebee.
                             1660.--Dollard and 16 companions sacrifice their lives ta save Ville Marie from destruction
                                      hv the Iroquois.
