CLASSIFICATION OF THE :POPULATION 53

ORIGIN OF THE POPULATION AT THE CENSUS OF 1921.

Table 18 classifies the population of Canada and of the Province
of Quebec according to the origin of the persans enumerated in 1921.
The individuaIs of British origin and the Fl'ench population form the
most important groups of the country with a total of 7,321,654 persans
out of 8,788,483, equal ta 83%. The othcl' units of various origin, in
arder of numel'lcal importance are the Germans (294,636), Jews (120,196)
Dutch (117,506), Indians (110,596), Austrians (107,671), Ukranians
(106,721), Russians (100,064). In the Province of Qnebec, the units of
the French race predominate and form 80% of the whole population.
The numerous changes in the nationalities of Central Europe following
the war, will not allow of comparisons being made of figures of the census
of 1911, with those of the last census.
Many individuals who \Vere recol'ded as Germans in 1911, were
registered as Dutch at the last census; others shovm among the Galicians,
Bucovinians, Ruthenians and Russians, in 1911, \vere numbered among
the units of Ukranian origin in 1921.
