                           1930 (cont'd)

                           Capacity in the Nave: 31 benches of4 seats, and 58 benches of 3
                           seats; in the galleries 54 benches; Total Capacity 488 seats. The
                           fabrique borrowed $10,000.00 (+ the 15% required by law) to cover
                           the costs of the renovation.


                           1931 On December 20 the Assessment Roll for all the Catholic
                           Properties in the Parish of Saint Jules was $102,075.00. The tax
                           assessed to pay the $10,000.00 debt was $1.00 per $100.00 of
                           assessment.


                           1933 On August 21 a concrete platfonn was built in front ofthe
                           Church at a cost of $250.00.


                           1940 On May 26 work was carried out on the fIrst cemetery and a
                           fence was erected to improve it's appearance at a cost of$125.00.

                           The "St-Louis, Roi de France" Mission was detached from Saint
                           Jules Pari~h and returned to Maria Parish. The last Micmac religious
                           event recorded in the Saint Jules Parish Register, perfonned by
                           Father Joseph-Wilfrid PROVENCHER, was the Baptism ofDoris
                           Simon MARTIN (Edward MARTIN and Lina BERNARD) on
                           September 20, 1940.


                           1942 On June 19 major work was begun on renovations to the
                           Presbytery, excavating a basement, adding a furnace and changing
                           piping, etc. The total cost was $2000.00, ofwhich $1400.00 was
                           borrowed.

                           1943 During the evening ofAugust 8 lightning struck the steeple
                           causing a fIre, and the Church built in 1913, burned to the ground.
                           At the same time the Presbytery was also damaged by the shock and
                           the heat from the fire. After the flre, Father Fran~is RANCOURT
                           and several parishioners salvaged the largest ofthe three bells.
                           On August 10 construction began on a temporary Chapel, 70 feet
                           (21.3 meters) long by 32 feet (9.8 meters) wide, on the west side of
                           the recently destroyed church.
