POLICE STATISTICS FOR THE YEAR 1925.
The information given in table 58 is taken from the C7'iminal Statis-
tics published by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. It must be noticed
that to establish a comparison, with the other figures of the table, the
population of the cities and towns hel'eafter mentioned was compiled
from the Municipal Statistics of the Province for 1925.
The tables relating to this investigation sho:w the number and
nature of the offences known to the police during the year ended on
the 31st of December, 1925. The persons brought before the courts
in 30 cities and towns, whose population was more than 4,000 inhab-
itants, amounted to 37,827, of whom 28,196 for the city of Montreal.
The aggregate of the oUences committed in the same centres amounted
to 46,685. The police effected 5,301 arrests with warrants and 18,773
without warrants; 13,753 otheJ' persons were reached by summons. These
arrests and summons \vere cQnnected with theft (6,865), burglary (1,876),
highway robbery (221), assault against the person, (991), and 36,732 other
offences for which no detail is'·given. The police employed in these speci-
fied localities \vcre 1.678, in 1925, for a population of 1,383',918 inhabitants
according to municipal reports; there ,vas therefore one policeman for each
824 persons to maintain order and to protect individuaIs and property.
