                                               TEACHING OF APPLTED SCIENCES.
The Polytechnic School of Montreal was founded in 1873 and
affiliated to Laval University in 1887. It was incorporated in 1892.
The object of the institution is to train civil engineers and chemistry
engineers. The division for architects, which was dependent upon the
Polytechnic School, is under the control of the School of Beaux Arts of
Montreal, since the beginning of the year 1923-24. The Polytechnic
School is directed by a corporation whose members are appointed by
the Lieutenant-Governor in Council. A preparatory year precedes the
the regular course of four years. The supplementary year is in order
to develop specialists, such as electrical engineers, construction and
mining engineers, etc. Amongst the matters studied are re-enforced
concrete, metal1ic construction, so.nitation, hydraulics, electrotechnics,
Burveying, geodesy, mineralogy, bridges, railways, roads, etc. In 1926,
nine pupils were awarded diplomas of civil engineers and three received
                           diplomas of chemistry engineers.
