Two types of certification are issued by the Institute
(established in 1983) for research in Atlantic Canada:
Certified Genealogist (Canada) and Genealogical Record
Searcher (Canada); the postnominals are CG(C) and
GRS(C). The current fee and three appropriate reference
names must accompany the preliminary application form.
The canddate is initially rated on a point system; successful
preliminary applicants will then be asked to submit three
samples of work, to be evaluated by three judges. All of the
procedure this far can be done by correspondence from
wherever you live in Canada, in either French or English.
However, upon favourable recommendations by the three
judges, applicants are then requested to attend a two-hour
personal emination and oral interview at a site in the Marz'times,
although, as their brochure says, "Every reasonable effort
is made to arrange times and places convenient to both
examiners and examinees." The Institute can provide a list
of qualified researchers.
