The only indigenous hereditary society in this country is
the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada. Lord
Dorchester's Resolution of 1789 and its accompanying
Form of Militia Roll gave clear recognition to those who
"adhered to the Unity of Empire" by allowing the initials
UE to follow their names. Dorchester deliberately extended
this privilege to "... all their Children and their Descendants
by either sex ..." Regular membership is granted to someone
who "bears allegiance to the Crown" (is a Canadian citizen
or the citizen of a country where the British monarch is
head of state), and who submits evidence of direct lineage
to a person who:
was residing before 19 April 1775 in one of the American
colonies that declared themselves independent of Great
Britain, and
joined the Royal Standard (a fighting unit on the British
side) before the Treaty of Separation in 1783, or
"otherwise demonstrated loyalty to the Crown during
the American Revolution," and/or
had proven loss of property or possessions because of
their loyalty, and
removed to territory that remained under Crown rule.

was a member of the Six Nations Indians under the same
