DEMOGRAPHIC STATISTICS OF THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC (.),
In order to obtain more complete data wlUch would enable corn-
parisons bejng made between the provinces, a uniform system of com-
piling demographic statistics was necessa,ry. The various plans for
cooperation submitted had no efficacious l'esults till after the interpro-
vincial conferences held in Ottawa, in June and December, 1918. The
draft of a law concerning the collection and compilation of demographic
figures was then submitted by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics to be
used as a basis of legislation by the prov.inces. Up to 1925, eight provinces
had accepted the project, the Province of Quebec having adhered, until
then, to its usuai mode of compilation.
Since t'he 1st of J anuary, 1926, the Hygiene Service of the Province,
in concunence with the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, issues uniform .
bulletlns with the other provinces. With the system now in force, the
reports are made on formulas approved and distributed by the Federal
Government. According to the Civil Code, an persons appointed to
register the demographic movement of the province must, for each
birth, marriage and death, fill in a formula and address the same to the
Düector of the Hygiene Service of the Province. A fee of 15 cents is
paid for each formula so sent to the Hygiene Service. A copy is also
sent to the Dominion Bureau where the compilation is made, the originaL
being kept on record by the bemographic Service at Quebec. Since the
lst J anuary, 1926, a monthly preliminary bulletin is issued by the
Hygiene Service of the Province which is completed by the final yearly
report.
