                                                           BIRTHS.

                               In the rural counties of the Province of Quebee, the birth-rate is
                           higher than in the urban centres, with the exception of small industrial
                           towns where sometimes it exceeds 50 per 1,000 inhabitants. In 1926,
                           the county of Lake St. John had a proportion of 50.4 births per 1,000
                           persons, this being 18.3 greater than the general average for the province
                           for the saille period. In the county of Brome where the English element
                           predominates the proportion of 17.5 was the lowest.      The foUowing
                           counties had a particularly noticeable birth-rate, the figures are for
                           the year 1926 and arê based per 1,000 of the population:

                               Matapedia              . 47.5     Frontenac ....          42.2

                               According to the following table, it ib show'n that the bil'th-rate in
                          the Canadian provinces varies between II.8 and 38.8. The two extremes
                          b eing in the provinces of Prince Edward Island and Quebec.      For the
                           year 1926, British Columbia had the lowest rate (17.4) while Quebec
                          r emained first with a proportion of 32.1.
