                                                     MATERNAL SCH OOLS.

                                Before concluding the primary schools section, it is advisable to
                           describe the importance of these institutions.     The purpose of the
                           maternaI schools is to prepare children for the primary elementary
                           Bchools by initiating them to work and to the reguJarity of study. They
                           are established by school commissions and are under the direction of
                           religious or lay teachers.  They are subject to the regulations of the
                           Catholic Committee of the Council of Public Instruction and supervised
                           by the school inspector of the district.  These schools numbered 33 in
                           1924-25 and had 6,095 enrolled pupils.

                                                AVERAGE SALARY OF TEACHERS.
                                Taken altogether the average annual salary in primary schools was
                           $1,571 for male teachers and M97 for female teachel's. Among Catholics,
                           in 1925, the average salary of teachets was $1,390 whilst with Protestants
                           it was $2,276.
