NORMAL SCHOOL8.
The foundatlon of the first pedagogie institutions in the Province,
dates back to 1857. In that year, three establishments were inaugurated,
the schools of Jacques Cartier and MeGill in Montreal and the Laval
school in Quebec, which received 192 pupils, viz: 89 boys and 103 girls.
The adoption of a course of studies destined to farm teachers was weil
received and the number of normal schools inereased rapidly, so mueh
80 that in 1926, there were 19 such institutions located in the principal
centres. This number includes the Roberval school opened in Sept-
ember, 1925. Two of these schools, Laval and Jacques Cartier have two'
departments, one for boys and one for girls. One of these institutions,
the McGill school, an English one, was annexed to Macdonald College
at St. Ann de Bellevue, in 1908; the others are Catholic establishments.
A new curriculum to eonform with that of the prims,ry sehools is
in force in aU the normal '3chools since the month of September, 1973.
A two years' course in one of these institutions is now required to
obtain a diploma. Hecetofore it W3.S only necessary for a pupil to atlend
a nOlmal school for one year to be entitled to present himself at. the
examination for a diploma, The diploma now granted is equivalent to
the former model school diploma.
The Central Boord of Examiners has 31so adopted the changes
required by tae Department of Public Instruction.
The revised curriculum consists of three sections (agficultural,
commercial and indu'3triaI) for boys and one of domestic science for girls.
