                ciates. The Island of Montreal becomes the property of the Sulpicians. Misunder-

       1665.-Anival of M. de Tracy, Intendant Talon und the Carignan regiment. First horses brought
                into New France. Forts Sorel, Chambly and Ste. Thérèse, erected on the Richelieu
                river.

       1666.-The firat cellilus shows a population of 3,215 in the colony.
       1667.-Second census: 3,918 inhubitants.
       1668.-The Minor Seminary of Quebec and tbe Agricultural Sehool of St. Joachim, founded by
                Mgr. de Laval.  Navigation estublished between Qucbec and the West Indies by
                Intendant Talon. Tithes established for thc support of the Catbolic clergy.
        1669.-M. Perrot is appointed governor of Montren.1. Lachine, nen.r Montreal, founded by Lu
                Salle.
        1670.-Hudson Bay Company founded.
        1671.-The Sieur de St. Lusson takes solemn possession of Sault Ste. Ma,rie and surrounding
                country in the Mme of L:>uis XIV. Fathers AlbllJlel and Denys ascend the Saguenay
                to Lake St. John.

                          9th Governor: M. de Frorde'lU1c (187210 1682)
        1672.-Fort Cataracoui built on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Fathers Albanel and Denys
                rooch James Bay over land.
        1673.-Jolliet a,nd Futher Marquette discover thc Mississipi.
       1674.-Quebec erected into Il. bishoprie.
       1679.-La Sulle has the ship Griffon built on Lake Onta.rio.
       1680.-La Salle erects forts Niagara and Crèvecœur. Jolliet receives a, grant of land on the Island
                of Anticosti. The King grants the fort and seigniory of Cutaracoui to Lu Salle.
       1681.-Reeollet monB."ltery erectcd in the Upper Town of Quebee.
       , 1682.-Mouth of the Mississipi diseovered by La Salle. He takes possession of the adjacent land
                by planting a cross with the arms of France and giving the country the name of
                L:>uisiana in honor of Louis XIV.

        16B4.-La Barre's expedition against the Iroquois with 1,200 troops.  The Governor, having
                signed a disadvantugeoua peuce tren.ty, is dismissed by Louis XIV. Erection of thc
                first Chapter of Quebec.

                at Verchères.
