1492.-Christopher Columbus discovers America and explores the islnnds San Salvador, Cuba,
Haiti.
1497.-Sebastian Cabot discovers Lfibrador.
1500.-Gaspard Cortereal discovers Newfoundland.
1524.-Verazzano explores the coast of America.
1534.-First voyage of Jacques Cartier. He takes possession of the country in the name of Frn.nce
and of Christ, by ereeting a cross surmounted by the arms of France at the head of
Gaspe Bay.
1535.-Cartier's second voyage. He ascendB the St. Lawrence to Hochelaga.
1541.-Cartier's third voyage. He brings severa.1 hundred volunteers.
1598.-First attempt at colonization, in AcadiD.. The Marquis de la Roche lands 60 convicts on
Sable Island, where they remain prisoners for 5 years.
1603.-De Chastes sends Champlain and Pontgravé on an exploring expedition in New France.

.I604.-M. de Monts' Company sends settlers to Acadia under the command of Champlain and
Poutrincourt.
1605.-Port Royal founded by de Monts.

1608.-Quebec founded by Champlain.
1609.-Champlain's expedition to the lake which bears his name; in a orst encounter with the
Iroquois, Champlain puts them to A.ight.
1610.-Champlain's second expedition against the Iroquois, on the river Richelieu. They are
again repulsed.
1611.-Two Jesuits, Rev. Fathers Massé and Biart. evangelize the Micmacs.
1615.-In a third battle with the Iroquois, near the Great Lakes, Champlain is wounded and
spends the winter in that region. Arrivai at Quebec of the Recollet Fathers Jamay,
Dolbeau, Le Caron and Brother Duplessis.
1616.-Establishrnent of the first schools at Three Rivera and Tadoussac. under the Recollets.
1617.-Louis Hébert, the orst settler, arrives at Quebec with bis family.
1620.-Construction of Fort St. Louis at Quebec. The Recollet convent is erected on the site of
the Genel'lll Hospital near the river St. Charles.
1621.-First eivil registers opened at Quebec. First code of laws pubJished at Quebec. Mont-
morenoy Company formed.
1623.-First attempts of the English to colonize Acadia under Sir William Alexander.
1625.-Arrival of the Jesuit Fathers Lallemant, Massé and Brébeui.
1626.-Champlain establishes a farm neur Cape Tourmente.
1627.-The Company of New France, called that of the Hundred Associates, is founded.
1G29.-Quebec taken by the Kirke brothers. Champlain is brought to England and later proceeds
to France.
1632.-Quebec restoroo to France by the treaty oC St. Germain en Laye. Champlain resumes
the office of Govemor and has the chapel of Notre Dame de la Recouvrance built.
