        1634.-Three Rivera founded by de la Violette.  Robert Giffard obtains the firat seigniory, where
                 the municipality of Beauport is now located (near Quehec).
         1635.-First college founded at Quebee hy the Marquis de Garnache.  Death of Champlain on
                 25th December.

         1636.-Island of Mentreal granted to M. de Lauzon.
         1637.-M. de Sillery founds an indUiltrial sebool for the Indians, three miles above Quebec.
         1639.-Arrival of the Ursuline and Hospital nuns.  Foundation of the convent of the former by
                 Madame de la Peltrie and of the Hotel Dieu of the latter through the generosity of
                 the Duchesse d'Aiguillon.
         1640.-Foundation of the Montreal Company, which purchases the island of tbnt name.
         1642.-Foundation of Montre!Ù, then Ville Marie, by M. de Maisonneuve.  Fort Richelieu built
                 near Sorel hy M. de Montmagny.
         1644.-The Hotel Dieu of Montreal founded by Jeanne Mance.
         1645.-The Company of the Hundred Assoeiates transfers its rights to the Compagnie des Habi-
                 tants.  Montmagny eonelndes a treaty of peaee \Vith the Iroquois, the Algonquins
                 and the Hurons.
         1646.-The Saguenay explored hy Father Dablon.  Martyrdom of Father Jogues, Jesuit, by the
                 Iroquois.  Father Druillette discovers the Kennebee and Chaudière rivers.
         1641.-Iâke St. John discovered b.y Father DeQuen.  Fort Richelieu burned by the Iroquois.
                 "The Council of Quebee" established.
                            Srd Gooernor: M. d'Ailleboust (1648 to 1651)
         1648.-Massacre of Father Daniel and 700 neophytes by the Iroquois at the Indian Village of
                 St. Josepb.
         1649.-Destruction by the Iroquois of the Indian villages of St. Ignace, St. Louis and St. Jean.
                 Massacre of Fathers Lalemant, Brebeuf and Garnier and nearly ail the Hurons.
         1650.-Martin Boutet opens a school at Quebec for the children of the French.  The Ursuline
                 convent burnt.

         1651.-DuplessÎs de Kerbodot, governoI' of the place, murdered at Three Rivers.
         1653.-Arrival at Ville Marie of Marguerite Bourgeoys, foundress of the Congrégation de Notre
                 Dame.
         1654.-The English seize Acadia.
         1657.-Arrival of the Sulpieians at Ville Marie.
         1658.-CanadA erected into an Apostolic Vicariate: Mgr. de Lav!Ù, titular bishop.

         1659.-Arrival of Mgr. de Laval, first bishop of Quebec.
         1660.-Dollard and 16 companions sacrifice their lives to Save Ville Marie from destruction by
                 the IroquoiB.

         16G2.-The Governor bnving fa.vored the trade in brandy with the India.na, Mgr. de Lnval com-
                 plains to the King of France and secures his recall.

         1663.-Sovereign Counci! establiBhed.  Return of the eharter of the Hundred Associates to the
                 King of France.  The Higher Seminary of Quebee founded by Mgr. de Iâval.  Great
                 earthquake whieh lasts intermittently for six monthB.  M. Gaudaill·Dufort sent by
                 the King to take possession of the country and make the first census.
