Q: How can I apply these genealogical principles and
usages as I work on my own particular families?
A: You can determine your own self-growth and
continuing education in the several ways suggested
in this chapter. Publications - such as manuals and
guides by leaders in the field - can be borrowed or
purchased. Accreditation systems exist for measuring
your competence at a peer level. Specific membership
requirements have been developed by lineage societies
for which you may be eligible. Genealogical
periodicals with scholarly standards have distinct
publishing guidelines for potential articles.
Self-Improvement and Education
For the large part, most of us will be content to hone our
skills and expand our knowledge by attending local courses,
workshops, seminars or perhaps conferences a little farther
afield. This is where membership in a genealogical society
is so valuable: it tells you when and where these events are
being held, and whether the overall theme or specific talks
have direct interest for you. The fellowship of a society
can result in numerous new contacts and ideas. Many of us are
prepared to plan a vacation to visit ancestral sites; why
