In a letter dz-ted January 2&, 1824, Rev. Metcalfe at
Perth, Upper Canada, says "I was appointed missj onary to this
new settlement of which Perth is the principal village, With
the assistance of Brother (Solomon) Wzidron, my worthy
cclleague, I have formed a four wseks' circuit, and ~otwith-
standing our difficulties have been many and even discouraging,
w~ have succeeded in establishing a society of upwards of LOO
in this place, and of fanring societies in other parts of the
circuit". (3)
It is also noted that "the members of the Nethodist
smxiety in Perth met at the chapel on Thursday, the 11th of
Ngvembar 1824, for ths purpose of taking into consideration
the best measures adoptef for procuring hay for the preacher's
hcrse, to appoint a person to keep the chapel clean and attend
-to keeping a fire in the stove at the proper times and to
procure ~i~od for the same: and in order to defray the expensem3
thereof, it was resolved That such members as wera a51e and
willing should pay one shilling per quarter". (35 "Brother

In 1825 Rev. John Ryerson was ay9ointed to Perth with
Samuel Bolton responsible for thz newly settled townships of
Lanark, Ram-say and Pakenhm Rev, William X. Willkarns succeeded
in 1826 and took Andrew W. Playfair as his lay assistant. Born
in France in 1790, he was son of author William PlayTair,
nephew of John Flayfair (Professor of Natural Philosophy at
Edinburgh University], grandson of a noted Presbyterian
Minister in Dundee, fomer lieutenant in the 204th Regiment,
colonel in the militia and blem.ber cf the Provincial ?arliamentt
he died Sept , 1, 1865 at his residence in Playrairville (3, 4).
