History of St. Mathieu Parish, Hammond, Ontario.

1860's Descendants of Loyalists move into the region, attracted by the pine forests and
the fertile soil. They call the area South Indian.
They are soon joined by French-Canadian families from Quebec
First railroad comes from Rockland and Limoges
Canadian Pacific builds a line from Montreal and Alfred, through Hammond to
Ottawa.
Construction of a building used as a school and community hall. Sunday masses
said by the Bourget parish priest; baptisms, marriages, etc. performed in Bourget
and entered in the Bourget parish registers.
Fr. Ludger Archambault is named as first parish priest and, as such, celebrates his
first mass on the 19 August 191 1.
Constuction of the church begins. By contract, has to be built for $12,895 and
finished by the 20 December 1912.
The rectory is built. Total cost is $3,280.
The church is consecrated by Msg. Gauthier, Archbishop of Ottawa.
Fire destroys part of the village but the church is saved.
A two-storey school is built. First eight grades are taught; in the 30's grades 9 and
10 are added. For the higher grades high schools were available in Rockland and
Plantagenet.
Telephone service is installed in the rectory. Cost: $15.48 per year
New fa~ade for the church, also two new hot air furnaces
Installation of electric lights, etc. authorized for the church, rectory and the
community hall.
St.Mathieu School is built: two classrooms, ofice, electric lights, hot water
heating. What luxury!
