                    CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT PERIOD

    1791.-Canada divided into two parts: Lower Canada and Upper Canada. The Bouse oC Assem-
             bly of Lower Canada comprises 50 members and tbe Legislative Council, 12 membera,
             The use of the two languages is recognized in the parliamentary debl\tes and the
             reports of the votes and proceedinga of Lower Ca.nada. Establishment of a semi-
             monthly postal service between Canada a.nd the United States.

    1797.-Establishment oC a week1y postal service between Canada and the United States. Mgr.

    1798.-Recollet convent and church at Quebec destroyed by fire. The Governor opposed ta

    1803.--8lavery declared iIlegal in Lower Canada. The Nicolet Seminary founded by Mgr. Plessis.

    1805.-The "Mercury", founded by the English.
    1806.-Mgr. Plessis, llth bishop of Quebec. The "Canadien" founded by the French Canadians.

    1808.-House diBsolved by the Governor. The same membern returned hy the people.
    1809.-The fust steamboat, the' 'Accommodation", descends the river from Montreal to Quehec.
            The presses of the "Canadien" seized and Bédard, Papineau, Tascbereau and Blan-
            chet imprisoned. Mgr. Plessis opposed to the Governor having the appointment lJf
            the parish priests made by the King.
   1811.-Foundation of a seminary at St. Hyacinthe and the "Herald" newspaper a.t Montreal.
                     7th Gavernar: Sir George Prevosl (1811 to 1815)

    l812.-The Americans invade Ca.nada, but are repu/sed at Detroit, Queenstown and Buffalo.
            At tbe Governor's request, Mgr. Plessis is officially recognized as bishop of Quebec
            hy the King. Legal existence of the Catholio religion recognized.
   1813.-Salaberry, at the head of 300 Ca.nadiana, repulses Hampton, in comma.nd of 7,000 Ameri-
            cao troops, at Chn.teauguay. The Americans again defeated at Frenchtown a.nd
            Chrysler's Farm. McGill College founded.
   1814.-The Americans defeated at Ln.colle a.nd Lundy'a La.ne. The treaty of Ghent puts an end
            to the war, There is (l. reciprocal restoration of the conquests made during the war,
            with the e~ccption of the frontiers of Maine, which were oruy rectified by the Ash-
            burton treaty in 1842.
