     1739.-Mgr. de l'Auhel'ivière appointed to succeed !'\'fgr. Dosquet, but his death occurs on arrivai
              at Quebec on the 20th August, 1740.
     1741.-Mgr. de Pontbriand, 6th bishop of Quebec.
     1743.-La Verendrye's eldest son dlscovers the Rocky Mountains and the source o(the Missouri.
     J744.-History of New France, by Fatber Cbarlevoix published.
     1745.-Louisburg taken by the English.
     1746.-Loss of d'Anvîlle's fleet, intended to re-capture LOUÎsburg.
     1747.-Tbe English defeated at Grand-Pré. The rollowing forts erected by La Verendrye's son:
              Bourbon, Dauphin, Postroyac and La Corne. M. de la Jonquiere, appointed governor,
              is made a prisoner by tbe Englisb near Cape Finisterre, in Spain, and held captive
              for two years in England.

     1748.-Treaty of Aix la Chapelle. Louisburg and Cape Breton restored to France. Forts GB.9-

     1749.-Halifa:i: foundcd, Lord Halü!J".~, founder of the town that beo.rs his name, brings thcre
              600 English families.

     1754.-M. de Contrecœur erects Fort Duquesne at tbe junction ol the Monongahela and Allegh-
              any rivera.-Jumonville assassinated by Waslùngton's soldiers near Fort Necesaity,
              Sieur de Villiers avenges the death of his brotber Jumonville by a striking victory
              in taking Fort Necessity.
     1755.-The English admirai, Boacaweu captures two vesseis of Dieskau's flcet in the Gull of St.
              Lawrence. Braddock defeated by Dumas o.t Monongahela. Forts Gaspareaux and
              Beauséjour to.ken by the English. Acadians dispersed by order of general Monckton.
              Baron Dieskau, French genero.l wounded and made prisoner with his troops at Fort
              Edward hy the English general, Jolmson.

     1756.-Arrival of Montcalm, Levis, Bourw.maque and Bougainville.
     J757.-Capture of Fort George or William Renry by Montcalm.
     1758.-Louisburg taken by the Englisb. Victory of Carillon. MontcaIm's gal1untry gains lùm
              immortal fame. The English take Fort Frontenac (Kingston). French forced to aban-
              don Fort Duquesne.
     J759.-Forts St. Frederick and Niagara captured by the English. The English defeo.ted at Mont-
              morency. Battle of the l'lains of Abraham. Montculm and Wolfe botb meet deatb
              in the battle. Quebec co.pitulates on 18th September.
