    1817.-Mgr. Plessis appointed member of the Legislative Council. Foundation of the first bank
             in the country, the Bank of MontreaL
    1818.-The question of the supplies begins to excite the public mind. The Quebec Bank founded.
             Trcaty between Canada and the United States respecting naval forces on Great Lakes,
             signed.

    1818.-The Governor prorogues Parliament, the members refUBing to vote a one fifth increase of
             the civil liat.
    1819.-Erection of Quebeo into an archbishopric. Death of the QQvernor.

    1821.-Excavation of the Lachine Canal, on the Island of Montreal, begun.
    1822.-A project for the union of the two Canadas presented clandestinely to the Imperial QQvern-
             ment and, as it is hostile to the French CA.nadians, Neilson and Papineau go to London,
             carrying a protest bearing 60,000 signatures. Montreal General Hospital founded.
    1824.-Foundation of the Ste. Thereile College. Foundation of 0. library by the Literary and
             Historical Society of Quebec. Act of the "Fabriques du Bas Canada" passed.
    1825.-Foundation of Chambly College. Death of Mgr. Plessis. Mgr. Panet, 12th bishop of
             Quebec. Opening of traffic in Lachine canal.

    1825.-In the Governor's absence, Sir Francis N. Burton caUBes the supplies to be voted by
             headings without details and js subsequently blamed by the King.
    1826.-Dalhousie refuses to sanction thc supply bill voted under Burton and dissolves the HOUlle.
             Foundl\tion of Bytown, now Ottawa.
    1827.-The French Canadians victorioUll in the clections choose Papineau as Speaker of the
             House. The Governor di&Lpproves this choice and dissolves the House. Fresh protest
            sent to England. Papineau maintained as Speaker and Dalhouaie recalled.
    1828.-Exploration of the Saguenay region.

    1829.-College of Ste. Anne de la Pocaticre founded. Kempt continues his predecessor's policy,
             recognizes Papineau as Speaker. bu~ refuses the modifications demanded by the
             Executive and Legislative Councils, the majority of whose membcrs are ereatures
             of the Government.

    1831.-Population of Lower Canada, 553,331 souls.
    1832.-Cho\era decimates ~he population. Quarantine station established at Grosse Isle. L'As-
            somption Collcge founded. Riot at Montreal over the election of a mcmber; thrce
            French Canadians killed and two wounded by the troops.
    1833.-The steamer "Royal William" sails from Quebec on the 5th August, arrives at Gravesend
            in England. This is the first vessel to cross the Atlantic under steam alone.
    1834.-Another cholera epidemic. The Canadians embody their grievances against England
            in 92 resolutions. Tbe St. Jean Baptiste Socie~y of Montreal founded by Ludger
            Duvernay.
