    1691.-The English of New England under Schuyler malte a descent upon Quebec by Lakc Cham-
             plain and are rcpul.'led at La Prairie de la Madeleine. Population of New France:
             12,431 souls.
    1693.-General Hospital founded in Quebec by Mgr. de St. Vallier.
    1694.-Foundation of Montreal General Hospital by M. Charon de la Barre. In 1747 this
             institution was confided to Madame d'Youville, foundress of Sisters of Charity.
    1695.-Fort Cataracoui, rebuilt by Frontenac.
    1696.-D'Ibervillc captures St. John, Newfoundland, and fort Pemaquid.
    1697.-Treaty of Ryswick: Hudson Bay restored to France, and Newfoundland to England
    1698.-Ursuline convent at Three llivers, founded by Mgr. de St. Vallier. Death of Frontenac.
             Population of the colony: 13,355.

    1701.-Great treaty of peace aigned at Montreal hetween the Indians and the French. Detroit
             founded by Lamothe Cadillac and Mobile by Lemoyne de Bienville. Canadians
             grll.nted thc right to manufacture. Beginning of the war of the Spanish Succession,
             which was to have repercussions in Canada.

    1704.-The settlements of Deerfield and Ha.verhill destroyed by Hertel de Rouville. Mgr. de
             St. Vallier, returning from F'l:ance on the "Seine", made prisoner by the English and
             obliged to spend 8 years in London. Church attacks Port Royal in Acadia, but is
             repulsed by Governor Subercase.
    170S.-Canadians captw'e the English posta ou Nev.ioundland.
    1706.-Death of d'Iberville, at Havana.
    1707.-March attacks Port Royal, but is driven off after a siege of 9 days.
    1708.-Death of Mgr. de Laval.
    1709.-M. de St. Ovide captures the forts defending St. John, Newfoundland.
    1710.-Port Royal (now Anna.polis), captured by the English.  M. de Subercase obtaius an
             honorable capitulation.
    1711.-Wo.lker's fleet, bound for Quebec, dcstroyed by a storm in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and
             Nicholson's army, whicb was to have effected a junction with Walker, retreats.
    1712.-Attack of Outagamîs on Detroit repulsed.
    1713.-Treaty of Utrecht. France cedes to England Acadia, Newfoundland and Hudson Bay:
             Louisburg founded by the Frcncb in Cape Breton or Ile Royale, its fortifications
             costing over thirty million livres.
    1718.-New Orleans founded by Le Moyne de Bienville.
    1720.-Arrival of the historian Charlevoix at Quebec.
    1721.-The south part of St. Paul street, Montreal, between St. Joseph and St. Peter streets,
             deetroyed by tire.
    1724.-Murder of Father Rasle, by the English, at Narrantsoua.k.
    1725.-Wreck of the "Chameau", carrying 250 passengers, Intendant Chazel, Recollets and
             Jesuits, near Louisburg. Del1tb of M. de Vaudreuil.

    1727.-Death of Mgr. de St. Vallier. Mgr. de Mornay named 3rd bishop of Quebec but he does
             not come ta Canada. Mgr. Dosquet administers the diocese.
    1729.-Mll.ssacre of the French in Louisiana by the Natchez. Fort Frederick erected at the head
             of Lake Champlain.
    1731.-Discovery of Lake of the Woods and Lake Manitoba by La Verendrye. Forts St. Charles
             and St. Pierre erected.
    1733.-La Verendrye discovers L~ke Winnipeg. Fort Maurepas erected. Fust forge established
             nt St. Maurice. Mgr. Dosquet, 4th biahop of Quebec.
