PREFACE
The 1935 edition of the Year Book is the twenty-second published
by the Bureau of Statistics of the Province of Quebec. This volume, a
compendium of t,he latest ava, ilable data, presents fi general SUl'vey of
conditions in the ProviDce; the retrospective tables, gi ven in conjunction
with the yearly statistics, permit of the reader's appreciation of the
progress attained in each domain, during vllrying periods. As in formel'
editions, aIl the information is drawn from official sources.
An important innovation marks the 1935 Yea.r Book. The French
and the English editions, previously issued separately, are united for
the first time in n, single volume. In its new form this publication, which
is distributed in nearly aIl the countries of the World, will serve as official
evidence of the bilingual charncter of the Province of Quebec.
Notwithstanding the considerable amount of additiona.I \vork
caused by this change, other important modifica.tions have been made
as well to the present edition. In the chnpter on Education a retrospec-
tive table is given with the annual statistics of speci91 schools. A new
text summarizeE the recent colonization movement launched bv the
Government. A study of the pulp and papel' production, considered
as a single industry, completes the information published to date. The
Agricultural Statistics Brn,nch has also altered the method of compiling
dairy statistics: figures relating to butter and to cheese factories, as weIl
as to combined fnctories, have been combined in one table. Finally,
the transactions of the co-operative agricultural societies and those of
the Co-operative People's Banks are not given in detail, in the present
edition of the Year Book: these statistics now constitute a new report
published by the Burea.u of Statistics.
l wish to express my sincere thanks to ail who, by their collabora-
tion, flssisted me in the editing of this Year Book.
The Editor of the Year Book,
G. LEMONDE.
