                French Canadians killed and two wounded by the troops.
       1833.-The Steamer Royal William suils from Quebec on the 5th. August, arrives al. Gra.veaend
                in Englnnd. This is the tirst vessel 1.0 cross the Atlantic under steam alone.
       1834.-Another cholera epidemic.  Thc Canadia.DB embody their grievMces againBt England
                in 92 resolutions. The St. Jean Baptiste Society of Montreal founded by Ludger
                Duvernay.

                           12th Govemor: Lord Gosford (1835 /.0 1838)
       1835.-A report unfavourable to the Canadians sent 1.0 England by the Governor. Popular feeling
                excited. The association of the Sons of Liberty founded al. Montreal.
       1836.-The first railway in Canada inaugurated from St. Johns to Laprairie. Montreal erected
               into a biBhopric. 1\'1gr Lartigue tirst bishop.
       1837.-Arrival of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Outbreak of civil war owing, 1.0 England's
               refusai 1.0 recognize the just daims of the Canadians. Fight.ing takes place al. Chambly
               and St. Denis, where the English troops are defeated, but they are victorious al. St.
               Charles and St. Eustache. In Upper Canada, Lyon :.fackenzie is al. the head of the
               revoit. Gosford returns 1.0 England.

                            Adminislrotor: Sir John Colborne (1838)

       1838.-Colborne suspends the constitution of 1791 Md a Council of 22 members, of whom 11
               are French Canadians, is formed.

                             13th Governor: Lurd Durham (1838)
       1838.-Most of the political prisoners liherated, except 24, who are exiled 1.0 the Bermudas. This
               act disapproved by London and the Governor resigns his office. Cardinal and Duquet
               executed al. Montreal.
                          14tft Gooernor: Sir John Colborne (1838 to 1839)

       1838.-Fresh rioting in Lower Canada. Colborne suppresses the troubles with great severity. No
               less than 89 political prisoncrs sentenced 1.0 dea.th, 47 exiled and 12 executed between
               March and December, 1838. In Upper Canada, tbe insurgents are defeated al. Prescott,
               Detroit and Niagara. From 2Q 1.0 30 prisoners sbot or hung in Upper Canada, hetween
               December 1838 and February 1839. These severe measures blamed by England.

                          15th Governor: Lord Sydenham (1839 to 1841).

       1839.-Lord Durham submits a report to London, suggesting the union of the two Canadas and
               the abolition of the French language in civil acte.

                              UNION PERIOD (1840 ta 18(7).
       1840.-Act of Union between Lower and Upper Canada sanctioned by Queen Victoria. Arrivai
               of the Steamship "Drita.nnia!, of the Cunard Line.
       1841.-Arrival of the Oblate Fathel"8 al. Montreal. Population of Canada: 1,150,000, of which
               700,000 French Canadian9. Union Act inauguratcd and Kingston chosen as the seat
               of governement. Death of Lord Sydenham. Rockslide al. Quebec; 32 persons killed.
               Adoption by Lower Canada of an Education Act.
