         1690.-Three war parties defeat the English at Corlar (Schenectady), Salmon Falls, (New Hamp-
                 shire) and Casco. Siege of Quebec by Phipps. Exploit of Madeleine de Verchères
                 at Verchères fort.
         1691.-The English of New England make a deacent upon Quebec under Schuyler by Lake Cham-
                 plain and are repulsed at La Prairie de la Madeleine. Population of New France:
                 12,431 soulB.
         1693.-General Hospital founded in Quebee by Mgr de St. Vallier.
         1694.-Foundation of Montreal General Hospital by M. Charon de la Barre. In 1747 this
                 institution was confided to Madam d'Youville, foundress of Sisters of Charity.
         1695.-Fort Cataracoui, rebuilt by Frontenae.
         1696.-D'Iberville captures St. John, Newfoundland, and fort Pemaquid.
         1697.-Treaty of Ryswick: Hudson Bay restored to France, and Newfoundla.nd to England.
         1698.-Ursuline convent at Three Rivers, founded by Mgr de St. Vallier. Death of Frontenac.
                 Population of the colony, 13,355.

         1701.-Great treaty of pence aigned at Montreal between the Indians and the French. Detroit
                 founded by Lamothe Cadillac and Mobile by Lemoyne de Bienville.  Canadians
                 granted the right to manufacture. Beginning of the war of the Span.ish Succession,
                 which was to have repercussions in Canada.

                           14th GOIJernor: M. de Vaudreuil (1703 to 1725)

         1704.-The settlements of Deerfield and Haverhill destroyed by Hertel de Rouville. Mgr de
                 St. Vallier, returning from Fra.nce on the "Seine'], made prisoner by the English and
                 obliged to spend 8 years in London. Church atta·cks Port Royal in Acadia, but is
                 repulsed by Governor Subercase.
         170S.-Canadians capture the English posts on Newfoundland.
         1706.-Death of d'Iberville, at Havuna.
         1707.-March attacks Port Royal, but driven off after a siege of 9 days.
        1708.-Death of MW de Laval.
         1709.-M. de St. Ovide captures thc forts defending St. John] Newfoundland.
        1710.-Port Royal (now Annapolis), captured by the EngliBh. M. de Subercase obtaÏlls an
                 honorable capitulation.
        1711.-Walker's fleet, bound for Quebec, destroyed by a storm in the GuU of St. Lawrence and
                 Nichol80n's army, which was to have effected a junction with Walker, retreats.
        1712.-Attack of Outagamis on Detroit repulsed.
        1713.-Treaty of Utrecht. France cedes to England Acadia, Newfoundland and Hudson Bay:
                 Louisburg founded by the French in Cape Breton or Ile Royale, its fortifications
                 costing over thirty million livres.
        1718.-New Orleans founded by Le Moyne de Bienville.
        1720.-Arrival of the historian Charlevoix at Quebec.
        1721.-The south part of St. Paul street, Montreal, between St. Joseph and St. Peter streets,
                 destroyed by fire.
        1724.-Murder of Father Rasle, by the English, at Narrantsounk.
        1725.-Wreck of the "Chameau", earrying 250 passengers, Intendant Cl.Jazel, Recollets and
                Jesuits, near Louisburg. Death of M. de Vaudreuil.

        1727.-Death of Mgr de Saint Vallier. Mgr de Mornay named 3rd bishop of Quebee but he does
                not come to Canada. Mgr Dosquet administcrB the dioeese.
        1729.-Massacre of the French in Louisiana by the Natchez.  Fort Frederick ereeted at the
                head of Lake ChB.mplain.
