        1663.-Sovereign Council established. Return of the charter of the Hundred Associates to the
                 King of France. The Higher Seminary of Quebec founded by j',-Igr de Laval. Great
                 earthquake which lasts intcrmittently for six months. M. GaudaiB-Dufort sent by
                 the King to takc posse.sion of the country and make the first census.
        1664.-The \Vest Indies Company obtaiflS the privileges of the Company of the Hundred Asso-
                 ciates. The Island of Montreal becomes the property of the Sulpicians. I\:lisunder-
                 standing between Goveroor de Mésy and Mgr de Laval.
        1665.-Arrival of 1'\'1. de Tracy, Intendant Talon, and the Carignan regiment. First horses brought
                 into New J.rancc. Forts Sorel, Chambly and Ste. Thérèse, ereeted on the Richelieu
                 river.

        1666.-The first census shows a population of 3,215 in the colony.
        1667.-Second census: 3,918 inhabitants.
        1668.-The Minor Seminary of Quebec and the Agricultural School of St. Joachim, founded by
                 Mgr de Laval.  Navigation established between Quebee and the West Indics by
                 Intendant Talon. 1ïthes established for the support of the Catholie elergy.
        I669.-M. Perrot is appointed governor of Mont,real. Lachine, near Montreal, founded by La
                 Salle.
        I670.-Hudson Bay C~mpany founded.
        1671.-The Sieur de St. Lusson takes soleron posscssion of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding
                country in the name of Louis XIV. Fathers Albanel a.nd Denys ascend the Saguenay
                to Lake St. John.

        1672.-Fort Cataracoui built on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Fathers Albanel and Denys
                reach James Bay over land.
        1673.-Jolliet and Father Marquette discover the Mississipi.
        1674.--Quebee erected iuto a bishoprie.
        1679.-La Salle has the ship Griffon built on Lake Ontario.
        1680.-La Salle erects Forts :i\-iagara and Creveeœur. Jolliet reeeives a grant of land on the is!and
                of Anticosti. The King grants the fort and seigniory of Cataracoui to La Salle.
        1681.-Recollet monastery ereeted in the Upper Town of Quebee.
        1682.-Mouth of the Mississipi diseovered hy La Salle. He takes possession of the adjacent land
                by planting a cross with the arms of France and giving the country the name of Loui-
                sillna in honor of Louis XIV.

        1684.-La Barre's expedition against the Iroquois with 1,200 troops.  The Governor, having
                signed 0. d.iJladvantageous peaee trcaty, is diamissed by Louis XIV. Erection of the
                tiret Chapter of Quebec.

        1688.-Mgr de St. Vollier, seCond bishop of Quebee.
        1689.-1"Iassacre of the inhabitants of Lachine by the Iroquois. The Sieters of the Congregation
                de Notre Dame open a. sehool at Quebee. The Abenaquis destroy 15 EngUeh forts.
