Catholic Marriage
Early registers like this often recorded baptisms, marriages
and burials or interments all in the same register, as they
occurred. It is of interest to note the observances that were
met before the priest would marry Martha Hammond to
James Mahoney. First Martha made a public profession of
faith to be accepted into the church, with her age stated,
and before several witnesses. A week later she was baptized
and two days following, the marriage took place. It not only
gives the names of parents, but also their overseas origins.
