Introduction
Q: Why read this book?
A: This is intended as a supplement to courses,
workshops or seminars you have attended;
reinforcement for your homework and the research
you have started; and an inexpensive reference work
when compiling and checking your research notes.
And reading the introduction to any source material is
strongly recommended!
This book will tell you about how the genealogical
community developed standards of evidence and
documentation, what those standards are and how you
can apply them to your own work.
This book will not tell you how to trace your ancestors
or how to find the sources you need for your own
research. These are provided by genealogical societies and
their resources; by local classes, workshops and seminars;
by attending conferences; by reading guides and
methodology books; by studying scholarly periodicals
in the library; or by taking online courses.
Genealogy and family history revolve around issues of
