                                   leaving an aggregate  balance  in  thc  Treasury of  both  funds of

                                             Prosperity  nud  Sta.i~difig of  the Society.
                                     TVhile tlic increase  of  the Library  has  been fully as large as
                                   in fornler  years, more  attention;  if  possible,  has  been  paid  to
                                   making  that  increase  niorc  selcct  aild  appropriate;  and  addi-
                                   tional attention has been given to securing manuscript historical
                                   narratives-which,   after all,  should ever  be regarded as first in
                                   importance in the  objects  and  collections  of  such  a Society.
                                   Thc past year nlay therefore be set down as  having been  one of
                                   continued prosperity to a11 the departments of  the Society;  and
                                   by common consent, the State Historical Society of  Wisconsin
                                   now ranlts among  the most flourishing of  its kind in the Union,
                                   and has already  done much  in giving  character and  reputation
                                   to our State ainong its sister States, as well as in Great Britain
                                   and Continental Hurope.
                                                    Increase  of  the Librurg.
                                      The iilcreasc of  tlie Library has been  as follows:

                                      We  have  thus  exhibited,  since  the re-organization  of  the
                                    Socicty  in Jannar-y,  1854, an  increase  of  over  1000  volumes
                                   annually;  and  this  exclusive  of  about  4,250  pamphlets  and
                                    unbound  documents,  and many files of  unbound newspapers and
                                   periodicals.  Of  the 1024 volumes added to the Library during
                                    the past ycar,  341.  mere by purchase,  and G83  by donation  and
                                    exchange;  and the  total number  purchased  since  the organiza-
                                    $ion of  the Society is 1275,  and 2871 received by donation and
                                    exchange.
