1. SCHARF CEMETERY
The Scharf Cemetery is located on the west half of Lot 32, Con.
11, in the Township of Coulbourn, on the south side of Highway NO. 7.
JL.7ie.s Scharf received the land directly from the Crown as early
as 1824. He died on April 1, 1832, at the age of 6? years and was
buried on his homestead farm, the beqinning of a family plot, as
there are other me~bers of the Scharf family buried there. In time
. neighbours requested permission to bury their dead there also.
The four corners became a thriving comnunity with James Wilson,
a Hotel Keeper; Robert Kenny, a Blacksmith; John Burrouqhs, a Cord-
wainer; an6 others located on the same lot. These families made use
of this burial ground. It is believed this Little comnunity was wiped
out in the Fire of 1870. Some of the neightouring farners made use of
this cemetery, such as Janes Bradley who buried his wife Ann Phillips
there.
Like the liazeldean Union Cemetery, with the passing of the, the
cemetery deteriorated into a state of disrepair, some of the headston'es
on one occasion being dislodged by a "twister" and broken.
This became one of the assignments of the cornittee consisting
of Mrs. Jonathan Cathcart, Ernest Bradley, ar,d iiillian Smtple appointed
by the Cou~cil of the Municipal Corporation of the Torr4ship of Goul-
bourn in the mid-1950s. After examina~ion and several meetings to
'discuss what improvements would be necessary, a report was presented
some three years later which was followed by the necessary work being
done to clean up thc grounds, and build the cement walls to embed
broken fragments of memorials for which the proper positions could not
be determined.
The cemetery is now closed with the exception of plots previously
allotted, and is now the responsibility of the Township of Goulbourn
for its upkeep.
The Scharf Cemetery was recorded by E. Marjorie Moodie and Bruce S.
Elliott on April 20, 1979, and checked the same day.
An earlier listing of the names and dates appearing on the various
stones was prepared in 1970 by Mr. and Mrs. R. Switzer, and checked
on June 18, 1972 by Elvyna and Micheline Sevigny. This listing,
which has been on file in Ottawa Branch, 0. G. S. Library under
number C-28, has allowed us to complete the details of stone Sll
which was damaged in the interim.
