NORWAX BAY UmED CBYFTBRY ad NORWAY BAY MGLICAR CBHETBRY
NO- Bay Cemetery is located on parts of Lots 9 and 10,
Range 1, Township of Bristol, County of Pontiac, Province of
Quebec. It is about two miles east of the village of Bristol and
about two miles south of Quebec Highrray No. 148.
It is believed the firat land for the cemetery was donated
by a man by the naine of Ross about 1830.
The first burial of which there is a record (that record
being the inscription on a tombstone) vas Ann WcDonald, wife of
Daniel Ross, who died in 1836 at the age of 68 yeara. Her husband
died in 1841 aged 82 years and was buried beside her. It is not
certain that this is the same Ross fdly that donated the land.
Records of early sales of plots have been lost. In some
cases church records of burials were destroyed by fire. That was
before the the when it was required that copies of such docu-
ments be forwarded to county and provincial archives. However,
since 1880 sale8 of plots and other records are carefully kept.
The cemetery, dotted with ta11 pines and stately oaks, has
been added to a couple of tiges over the years and now covers an
area of about ten acres. An additional strip along the east side
purchased in recent years is held in reserve for future use.
The cemetery is maintained by a volunteer committee composed
of members appointed by the congregations of St. Andrews - Knox
United (fomerly Presbyterian) Church, Bristol Yemorial Presby-
terian Church and Quyon United Church. However, it is used by
memy denominations.
Expenses are met by freewill offerings along with a few
small endowments and investments yielding a modest amount of
interest.
The second Sunday of July each year is set aside as Deco-
ration Day and a Memorial Service is held. This event is always
well attended and the offering taken provides most of the funds
used for maintenance.
ùiembers of the committee and others as well as plot holders
and their friends donate a great deal of free the in order to
keep Nomay Bay Cemetery beautiful.
It is believed that Nomay Bay Anglican Cemetery was estab-
lished about 1830 to 1840. It is located on Lot 10, Range 2,
Township of Bristol.
Maintenance is carried out under the direction of the rec-
tor and the two wardens of St. Thomas' Church, Bristol.
No information is available regarding early history, first
burials, etc. It would appear that most Anglicans in the district
bury in the larger cemetery.
