The organization of public hygiene and health services in the Province has
progTessed steadily during the last twenty years; at the present time every
county is served by a Health Unit. A smoyey of the Province's mortality accord-
ing to the principal causes of death, from 1926 to 1945, is inc1uded this year,
as weil as the chief statistics pertaining to County Health Units, from 1927 to
1947, in the chapter on Public Health. A comparison of these two series of
figures will show that, with the expansion of Health Units, infantile mortality
has decreased as has the number of deaths due to contagious diseases and
         tuberculosis.

             The Year Book already contained information concerning the forest domo.in;
geology and the water power resources of the Province. 1'0 complete the brief
data on our natural resources, two additions have been made to the text: one
on our agricultural wealth, the other on our maIitime fishing territory. :New
information has also been included in various other sections, namely: in the
chapter 'on Agriculture, the gross value of agIicultural production, estimated
in accordance with a new method; in the chapter on Mining, a section on the
asbestos products industry and another on titanium ores; in the chapter on
Labour, a section on apprentic"ehip aid and one on the labour force; the results
of the provincial general elections of July 28th, 1948, are given in an Appendix.
In the chapter on Construction, building permits issued have been repla.ced by
contracts awarded and the number of new buildings completecl; in Nlunicipal
Finances, the sections pertaining to Revenue and Expenditure and the Balance-
Sheet of municipal corporations have been completely revised, etc... This
summary, incomplete as it is, gives proof of the l'rade and Commerce Depart-
ment's effort to make of the Statistical Year Book as nearly perfect a Bource of
         numeIical information as possible.

In closing it must be pointed out that some of the data were taken from
federal BtatiBticB. The valuable co-operation afforded by the heads of the various
branches of the Provincial Government is also acknowledged with thanks.

                                                  G. LEMûNDE,
                                                          Acting Statistician.
