been published by the Bureau of Statistics of the Province of Quebec.

The J'eader vrill Rnd in this publication numerous data indicating, as exactly
as possible, the rapid evolution of the economic conditions of our Province and
detuiled studies of certain aspects of the national economy. The creation of
new industries and the expansion of those already in existence as weil as the
development of the several administrative services furnish also materio.1 in
                         abundance.

In the number of new subjects dealt with in the present edition, special
mention should be made of a descriptive article of the various branches of the
Department of Youth and Social 'Velfal'e. Several additions and modifications
are also worthy of note. The Chronology, resumed last year on a modified plan
from 1867 to 1921, lS continued this year down to 1936, a perspective over several
years making possible a more objective choice of the events.

In the chapter on Population, the Census secbon includes six new tables
and two new graphs illustl'ating the mbanization and the ageing of our popula-
tion. The texts and tables l'egarding schools of Arts and Cra!'ts, Household
Science schools and Household Science Extension Courses have been revised.
A more detailed description of the ol'ganization of the Depurtment and a few
new tables from the agricultural census of 1941 constitute the changes made
in the chapter on Agriculture. There will also be found in this edition the gross
value of manufacturing production by counties from 1938 to 1944 as weil as
the principal statistics of l'etail trade, likewise by counties, according to the census
                         of 1941.

The present system of registering marriages, births and deaths had been
In force for twenty years. The occasion was, therefore, a fo.vourable one to
present a complete review of the demographic movement during that period.
The Provincial Vital Statistician kindly consented to give his active collaboration
to this work. The chapter on Mines has also undergone a complete revision:
