PREFACE
The 1938 edition of the Year Book is the twenty-fiJth to be iBsued by the
Quebec Bureau of Statistics. This publication providcs a general survey of
existing economic conditions. Ali the information it contains emanates from
official sources: Federal and Provincial departmental reports and special compi-
lations ma.de by the Bureau of Statistics.
This edition contains several important additions which deserve mention.
In the chapter on Population, earning'8 of persons gainfully employed during
the twelve months preceding the last census and the classification, according
to the number of chHdren, of families at the census of June 1st 1931, constitute
two new tables. Fol' the first time the Year Book gives information concerning
the birthplace, civil status, age, etc., of persons enjoying the OId Age Pension,
as weIl as a brief summary of the Act providing pensions for the blind. Also
for the first time, it shows the operations of the Quebec Farm Credit Bureau in
detail. The chapter on Agriculture contains a recapitulation, since 1924, of the
tobacco, principa.l fruits, maple sugar and syrup, honey, egg and wool production.
Besides, in the chapter pertaining to Economic Activity, an estimate is also given
of sales made by retail trade establishments, by provinces, since 1932.
A number of tables in the 1938 Year Book are iIlustrated by meanB of gra-
phical charts. These help the reader to gain a more accurate idea of the trend
recorded over a fixed period.
