14 About Genealogical Standards of Evidence
Membershp is predicated upon one's ability to show evidence
of direct descent from a certain qualified ancestor. A few
examples are Daughters of the American Revolution,
Descendants of Charlemagne, the Mayflower Society or
the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada. This
hnd of society has been taken to the nth degree in some
cases, even to the organizing of illegitimate descendants of
specific monarchs. An arguably comparable concept is the
more flexible approach of "one-name" or surname societies
and the eclectic (Scottish) clan associations.
All these groups originated to answer a need for definition
and identity in personal historical roots. All of them are
realizing that there are mutual benefits in the use of widely
acceptable principles for genealogical research and
publishing.
