Monstem - A  number  of  monsttrs
                               and  hybrids  are  found  in  British
                               Heraldry.  They  originated  from
                               classical  and  mediaeval. mythology
                               combined  largely  with  the  imagina-
                               tion  of  early Heralds. The principal
                               among  them  are  the  following:
                                The  Dragon.  a  monster  with  a
                               horny  head  and  forked  tongue,  a
                               scaly  back  and  rib-iike  amour  on
                               his  chest  and  belly,  bat-like  wings,
                               four  legs  ending  in  talons  and  a
                               pointed  barbed  tail.  It  may  be
                               found  rampant  (generally  terrned
                               semant)  passant  and  statant  and
                               very  rarely  displayed.
                                 The Wyvern (wivern)  is a End of
                               dragon  but  with  only two  legs and
                               a knowed  tail,  on which  he  sits, in
                               place  of  his  hinds  legs.  When
                               blazoned  proper  he  has  a  green
                               Iiead, back and legs and a red chest,
                               belly  and  insides  to  his  wings.
                                                                             Wyvern
                                 The  Cockatrice  is  similar  to  a     Dragon  passant
                               wyvern but with a cocks head. comb
                               and wa ttles.
