ST ANDREW'S & ST PAUL'S CEMETERY
This cemetery is located just south of Russell Village, on the south side
of the Castor River. It appears to have been developed in two stages as
there is a deep gully running diagonally through the middle of it, leaving
in effect two small cemeteries, one on each side of the gully. The cemetery
is well maintained.
An analysis of the 102 tombstones provides a wealth of information. The
earliest burials appear to have occurred during the period 1850 to 1865.
Charles Sealey PILLAR (stone 63) died in 1861 at the age of 15 years. His
brother, Nehemiah PILLAR died in 1851 at the age of 9 weeks. Ira STEARNS
(stone 95) died at the age of 6 years in 1866.
The oldest person buried in this cemetery was William Powell CHERRY, who was
born in 1877 and died 95 years later in 1972 (stone 46). The next oldest was
Margaret WOODS, born in 1835, died in 1928, at the age of 93 years (stone 8).
Other older persons are to be found at stones 64, 96 and 80.
The earliest birth dates indicated by the stones are thos of John PILLER, born
1793, died 1885. He was 92 years of age and also a veteran of the War of 1812.
Those persons who emigrated to this country came principally from Ireland.
Lance Corporal George William H. HOWES, who accompanied the Canadian Expedition-
ary Force to France, was killed in action there on August 12, 1918 (stone 17).
A young girl was killed in an automobile accident in 1917 (stone 5).
A total of eleven persons were 80 or older at time of death.
The frequency of names which was obtained from the index of names in the ceme-
tery shows PILLAR with a majority of 33 names, followed by EASTMAN with 25
names, and then FADER and CHERRY with 20 each.
