ST THERESE ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY
This cemetery is located in the extreme south-west corner of Russell
Township, just a few hundred yards north-west of the village of Marionville.
The cemetery is laid out is a most methodical manner - extremely straight
lines in all aspects. See the cemetery map further in this report. At the
present time it is next to a corn field. It is not completely grass covered,
in fact it is very muddy for about 40% of its area.
The first death occurred in 1863, but there were no further burials until
after the turn of the century. Presumably the 1863 death was placed on the
tombstone many years after the event.
The 95 tombstones do give the following information;
a) The earliest recorded death was Narsis GODEAU, who died in 1863, at
34 years of age (stone 89).
b) The oldest person buried here was Isidore LAVPCTOIRE, born 1875, died
1977 at the age of 102 years (stone 68).
C) Maria BOUCHARD was another 100 year oldster, born 1875, died 1975,
(stone 78).
d) This area seemed to have a high proportion of very old people, ie 2
were over 100, 2 between 90 and 99, and 9 between 80 and 89.
e) The earliest recorded birth date was that of Elie SIGOUIN, in 1818,
followed by John RUSHFORD in 1824 (stones 89 and 90 respectively).
f) All were first generation Canadians - none having emigrated from
overseas.
g) The frequency of names which was obtained from the index of names in
the cemetery shows MARION with a majority of 55 names, followed by
BOUCHARD with 19 names, and then DAGENAIS with 18.
