THE LOUCKS CEMETERY

This cemetery is located on the south side of the Castor River, about one
mile east of the Village of Russell. It is a relatively small cemetery with
only 82 tombstones. However, the type of information therein is varied and
                    interesting.

The cemetery is very well maintained and the records indicate that it was in
use as early as 1847, when Charles DUNCAN died at the age of 83 (stone no. 59).
The cemetery was well established in the 1880's as shown by the large number
                    of deaths during that decade.

The oldest persons buried were Eliza Jane MORROW, aged 100% years at the time
of her death in 1933 (stone no. 16). Rosanna HOLMES was 94 in 1938 (stone
no. 25). Eliza Jane STEVENSON (stone 27) and Maria Jane BURROUGHS (stone 47)
were also 94 in 1933 and 1946 respectively. In all some 6 persons were in
their 90's at time of death. Quite a proportion of really old persons out of
a relatively small sample of persons.

The earliest birth dates as indicated by the inscriptions are Charles DUNCAN,
who was born in 1764 (stone 59); Thomas MORROW and his wife, Letitia GIBSON,
who were born in 1795 and 1796 respectively, and both were in their 80's.

The majority of the emigrants came from the Counties of Cavan, Tyrone and
                    Donegal in Ireland.

Stone No. 59 refers to the death due to the "Islander" disaster at Skagway,
                    B.C. in 1901.

Stone No. 44 is interesting, and because of its puzzling nature a photograph
was taken to doubly ensure that the information was correctly recorded. Any
information as to "who" is "who" would be greatly appreciated.

One stone indicates affiliation with the IOOF (stone 43).

The frequency of names which was obtained from the index of names in the
cemetery shows LOUCKS with a majority of 39 names, followed by MORROW with
                    19, and HAY with 16.

One stone (no. 19) shows that P.O. Eric P. TWINAME was killed in action on
September 1943. Stone 17A indicates that Charles H. LOUCKS served as a
Private in the 38th Battn, C.E.F.
