course of time was called St Bernard: several descendants named St
Bernard lived along the River St Clair. William was a trader in
Det~oit. In 1762 he bought a farm on the North East Coast of Detroit.
This farm was patented from the French Government by Charles Chene on
14 Jul 1734. The farm became the residence of the Bernard family and
ownership of it passed to the son, Hippolyte Bernard, who sold it to
Francis de Paul Malcher in 1802. Under the American regime this farm
is called Private Claim No 16. Francis de Paul Malcher deeded the farm
8 APT 1808 to five trustees representing the Catholic Church on the
North East Coast of Detroit. From that time on the farm belonged to
the church and was called the "Church-Farm"
